Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Are lab grown diamonds real diamonds?

A: Yes! Lab grown diamonds are chemically and visually identical to natural mined diamonds.  The only difference is they were formed via high tech process that simulates billions of years of growth in a shorter time frame.

Q: How much do lab grown diamonds cost?

A: Just like natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds are available in a variety of qualities and are judged using the 4 C's, Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat weight.  Larger diamonds will cost more than smaller diamonds, however, because lab grown diamonds are man made and less rare than natural diamonds, they generally cost 80%-90% less than natural diamonds of similar quality.

Q: Will I or my friends be able to tell the difference between a lab grown diamond and a natural diamond?

A: No, lab grown diamonds are not distinguishable from natural diamonds.  In fact, most jewelers and gemologists cannot even tell the difference between the two without specialized grading equipment manufactured specifically for the purpose of differentiating the two types of diamonds.

Q: Will a lab grown diamond hold it's value or increase in value?

A: Lab grown diamonds are a relatively new market segment.  The abundance of lab grown diamonds has increased in the last few years and is expected to continue to do so.  Pricing of any commodity is a relationship between supply and demand.  Since supply is expected to continue or possibly increase, it is not expected that lab grown diamonds would be worth more in the future.  Natural diamonds are now preferred by over 70% of couples getting engaged, this radical change in demand for natural diamonds is expected to drastically impact natural diamond pricing now and for years to come.  Therefore our suggestion is to look at your diamond jewelry choice as a consumer good to be enjoyed and worn rather than locked away in a safe.

Q: Are lab grown diamonds available in all shapes and sizes?

A: Yes, lab grown diamonds are available in all shapes and sizes just like natural diamonds.  They are also available in special novelty cuts that natural diamonds would never consider creating because natural diamonds are cut to maximize the carat size of the finished diamond, giving them less freedom and creativity in creating unique shapes and sizes that lab grown diamonds can provide.

Q: Do I need to insure my lab grown diamond jewelry?

A: You often have limited coverage for personal property within your homeowner's insurance. We recommend not insuring lab grown diamond jewelry because the replacement value is much less significant than natural diamond jewelry.

Q: Isn't gold at a record high? How does that impact the price of my jewelry?

A: Yes, gold has recently set all-time high prices and is continuing to climb. The typical conversation 15-20 years ago was that 80%-90% of the value of your engagement ring would be the diamond center so that was the most important part of the conversation.  These days with lab-grown diamond jewelry the relationship has changed.  Now it really depends on the ring and how many side diamonds are featured in the ring, however with higher gold prices and lower lab-grown diamond prices we are seeing diamonds cost 20-50% of the total ring cost.
